But, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners’ latest research, iOS users in general were just a bit more likely to stick with the iPhone than and Android users were to pick another Android smartphone.

Here’s CIRP’s chart calculating the loyalty rates of smartphone users by the mobile OS they choose. It shows 78 percent of iOS users chose another iPhone, while 67 percent of Android users stayed with Google’s OS. There is some switching among those though: 14 percent of former iOS users went Android, while 27 percent of former Android users crossed over to the Apple mobile ecosystem.

You can also see how iOS and Android are continuing to decimate the previous era’s smartphone champ, Blackberry: 34 percent of former Blackberry users switched to Android, while nearly half, 48 percent, moved over to iOS.

But the real battle that that Google and Apple need to focus on now is winning the feature phone users who have yet to upgrade to a smartphone. So far, Android is winning, gathering 50 percent of basic phone users, while just 39 percent chose iOS. This fight explains why Apple is pushing its iPhone 4 and 4S so heavily (and having pretty good success). It wants to lure in users who don’t mind upgrading to a fancier phone as long as it’s cheap, like the free iPhone 4 or $99 iPhone 4S with carrier contract.

In this chart, you can see a more granular break down of Android device makers and how their individual loyalty rates compare to the iPhone:

Smartphone brand loyalty CIRP June

Just as the previous graph showed, iPhone owners are pretty loyal, with a 78 percent retention rate — though if they are going to switch, they mostly end up choosing a Samsung device, which speaks to Samsung’s aggressive recent ad campaigns against the iPhone. Samsung performs next best, with 52 percent loyalty to its brand of smartphone. But HTC (27 percent), LG (18 percent), Motorola (9 percent) and Blackberry (10 percent) performed miserably when it came to keeping their customers.

Samsung Bada Gets First SDK https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/samsung-bada-gets-first-sdk/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/samsung-bada-gets-first-sdk/#comments Tue, 11 May 2010 07:56:49 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=1472 Samsung has released the Software Development Kit for its Bada mobile phone operating system.

The SDK is an invitation to software developers to start building applications for the Bada OS before the release of Samsung’s flagship phone, the Samsung Wave.

Revealed on the Bada Developers blog, the SDK will come with APIs, compilers, debuggers, important codes and several tutorials and documents that give a step by step break down on how to start developing for the platform.

Samsung has not yet given details on the revenue sharing deal it will have with developers but many tech pundits believe that they will be offering around 70 per cent of the revenue gained per development.

The Bada OS will thrust Samsung into the middle of the smartphone war, currently dominated by Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android based smartphones.

Samsung, which has struggled with sales ever since the iPhone entered the market, is also the member of the Wholesale Application Community and has phones based on both Android and Symbian OS.

Developers can download the first version of the Bada SDK by registering themselves on the Bada Developers website.

Samsung's Bada gets a developer kit https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/samsungs-bada-gets-a-developer-kit/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/samsungs-bada-gets-a-developer-kit/#respond Mon, 10 May 2010 13:03:01 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=1446 When I’m Bada I’m better?

Developers desperate to start creating applications for Samsung’s Bada platform can now start coding, though it will be few more weeks before there’s a handset to run them on.

The Software Developer’s Kit version 1 is available from the Bada Developers’ portal, which promises that the Bada-based Wave phone (which should be shipping by the end of the month) will be followed by “successive promising handsets”, and that Bada phones will be available globally later this year.

Bada is Samsung’s answer to Apple’s iPhone/iTunes combination – the platform is entirely owned by Samsung, which will approve and distribute all the applications. That might seem strange given that Samsung also supports both Android and Symbian and is a member of the widget-obsessed Wholesale Application Community, but never let it be said that Samsung left a base uncovered.

The Wave is an attractive enough handset, but at almost £400 it’s priced more like a smartphone than the mid-range feature phones that the Bada platform is supposed to enable applications for.

But the Wave is intended as a flagship phone for Bada, the one that developers use to show off their applications before selling them to punters equipped with lesser handsets.

How much lesser we don’t know, and until Samsung tells us it’s hard to imagine many developers rushing to create applications for a phone that promises all the expense of a smartphone without the features.

Samsung placing weight behind Android over Bada https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/samsung-placing-weight-behind-android-over-bada/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/samsung-placing-weight-behind-android-over-bada/#comments Wed, 05 May 2010 07:40:30 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=1428 And not much room left for Windows Phone 7

Samsung has announced its forthcoming smartphones will be mostly based on Android over the next year.

It has stated that 50% of future smartphone releases will be using Google Android, despite it only having two phones in the UK using the OS.

Samsung has recently unveiled its own smartphone OS, Bada, and the expectation was that the Korean firm would be using it in a majority of its smartphones.

Bada-boo

However, according to Reuters this proportion will only be 33%, meaning it could be a slower start than anticipated for the new proprietary OS.

Samsung hasn’t commented on what the remaining 16.3% of its smartphones will run, but its likely the majority will be Windows Phone 7, given the Korean firms close ties with Microsoft in the mobile space up until now.

Samsung has already announced the Wave, its first Bada-based phone, which will be arriving later in the year, and the new Galaxy S, its latest Android phone to join the Galaxy and Galaxy Portal in the UK.

Seven to power Samsung’s Social Hub https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/seven-to-power-samsungs-social-hub/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/seven-to-power-samsungs-social-hub/#comments Fri, 02 Apr 2010 05:59:47 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=462 Samsung has partnered with email specialist Seven to offer push-email (and some other) services to its Social Hub users. The service was unveiled as part of the Korean company’s efforts to push its Bada platform and offer an addition value for users, whether they own the Wave or the recently announced Galaxy S smartphone.

In addition to email services, Seven will also deliver instant messaging services and access to popular social networks to Samsung users.

Financial details of the deal were unknown, but there are no doubts this is a huge win for Seven. Samsung, after all, is the world’s second largest mobile operator.

The question now is – how many people will Samsung entice to use Social Hub? Personally I like having a dedicated social networking clients, but I’m all for multi-network IM apps. If Samsung (and Seven) can pack all that in a single, easy to use app, they may have a winner. We’ll see where this goes…

Samsung Reveals Galaxy S Google Android Phone https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/samsung-reveals-galaxy-s-google-android-phone/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/samsung-reveals-galaxy-s-google-android-phone/#comments Wed, 24 Mar 2010 06:16:21 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=281 Samsung unveils a new Google Android smartphone, the Galaxy S, at the CTIA Wireless conference in Las Vegas. Running on Android 2.1 and powered by a 1GHz processor, the smartphone features Super AMOLED, which the company says makes its 4-inch screen 20 percent brighter with 20 percent more battery life. Samsung describes the Galaxy S as a multimedia device capable of delivering movies and ebooks, and is partnering with a number of companies, including Skiff and Paramount Pictures, to deliver content.

LAS VEGAS—Samsung unveiled a Google Android smartphone, the Galaxy S, at the CTIA Wireless conference on March 23. In keeping with the trend of multimedia-capable smartphones, Samsung also revealed that it had partnered with companies such as Skiff and Paramount Pictures to bring content such as ebooks and movies to the Galaxy S at an unannounced later date, possibly when the device itself rolls out in summer 2010.

During a presentation at the Las Vegas Convention Center, images of the Galaxy S flashed on a massive screen as Samsung executives discussed the capabilities of the slim touch-screen device, which has a form factor reminiscent of the Apple iPhone or HTC Droid Eris. Social networking for consumers was emphasized, including Samsung’s Social Hub, which integrates the user’s various social networks into a single interface.

The Galaxy S has Super AMOLED technology, which the company says makes its 4-inch screen 20 percent brighter, with 80 percent less sunlight reflection and 20 percent more battery life. The smartphone runs Android 2.1 and is powered by a 1GHz processor.

During the presentation, a partnership was announced with Skiff, a company dedicated to optimizing e-reader content for smartphones. A project developed by Hearst, which also unveiled a Skiff Reader device at January’s Consumer Electronics Show, Skiff’s lineup of e-periodicals apparently includes Hearst publications such as Esquire along with outside properties such as The New York Times.

Paramount and Samsung are also apparently preparing movie-related content for the Galaxy S and other phones in the upcoming S Series.

Samsung’s global share of the mobile device market was 20.1 percent in 2009, up from 16.7 percent in 2008. In 2009, it shipped more than 200 million devices.

“Touchphone models were the key to Samsung’s high-end growth in 2009, but we expect the vendor to switch some of its focus to Bada/Android smartphones and the Samsung Apps initiative in 2010,” Neil Mawston, a Strategy Analytics analyst, wrote in a Jan. 29 report. That report placed Samsun behind worldwide market leader Nokia, but ahead of LG and other handset makers.

Samsung’s mobile-device lineup also includes its upcoming E60 e-reader, which will access Barnes & Noble’s ebook store and utilize the bookseller’s ebook lending feature. The 5-inch Samsung device will use either a PC connection or built-in WiFi for book downloading, as opposed to the 3G connection utilized by other popular e-readers such as Amazon.com’s Kindle or Barnes & Noble’s Nook. The E60 will sell for $299.

The MWC 2010 finally ended February 18, 2010. It was a hectic week full of interesting announcements, exciting new devices and almost no sleep. But thanks to Barcelona for such a warm welcome yet another year.

More than 49,000 visitors from 200 countries attended the 2010 GSMA Mobile World Congress. The event welcomed 1,300 exhibiting companies and occupied more than 56,000 net square meters of exhibition and business meeting space.

Unfortunately, Nokia didn’t make a product announcement despite all the rumors. In fact Samsung, of all manufacturers, was the only company to present a ground-breaking mobile phone (a new OS and a new type of display). But even they didn’t show anything interesting alongside it.

Anyway, we still found some interesting topics and devices to cover but we leave this year’s congress with mixed feelings – mainly due to our high initial expectations.
