Now the browser maker has graduated its beta to an official shipping 10.52 version, complete with a slew of clever new features.

Opera 10.52 boasts a more Mac-like interface, but this new beauty is not just skin deep. More of the browser has gone Cocoa for better integration with Mac OS X and other apps, which means it now supports Growl and multi-touch gestures. As with Safari on recent MacBooks, Opera 10.52 users can pinch-to-zoom, use two fingers to scroll, and three fingers to navigate back and forth through pages.

Opera 10.52 also gained Firefox’s “Awesome Bar” feature of searching from the address bar. Other additions include customizable search engines, private browsing per window or tab, and dialog boxes that are displayed as page overlays instead of dialog boxes so you can still switch tabs or windows to do something else.

Opera 10.52 for Mac is a free download that requires Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or later on an Intel Mac.

Opera Mini tops all of Apple's top app charts https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/opera-mini-tops-all-of-apples-top-app-charts/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/opera-mini-tops-all-of-apples-top-app-charts/#respond Thu, 15 Apr 2010 07:25:25 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=987 The Opera Mini 5 application is now at the head of all “Top Apps” lists, from every country in which the App Store is available.

There are over 50 million Opera Mini users globally.

Opera Mini uses Opera’s servers to render and compress pages, thus increasing speed for the end user, and also working around Apple’s stringent rules.

The company says users of the iPhone over AT&T’s slower 2G Edge data will definitely feel the “uptake in speed.”

Whether all the downloads are just a curiosity or proof that iPhone/iPod Touch users are looking for choice within their hardware remains to be seen, but it seems pretty clear that Opera will be gaining a significant amount of users.

Skyfire's response to iPhone's Opera Mini Us, too! https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/skyfires-response-to-iphones-opera-mini-us-too/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/skyfires-response-to-iphones-opera-mini-us-too/#respond Wed, 14 Apr 2010 13:13:17 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=733 When Opera Software announced late Monday that its Opera Mini browser would hit the iPhone App Store, we guessed it wouldn’t be long before we saw other browser-makers follow suit by producing similar efforts that get around Apple’s restrictions facing iPhone browsers that compete with the native Safari.

Looks like our guess was correct. On Tuesday, Skyfire, another mobile browser maker, blogged a post congratulating Opera for its success and stating Skyfire’s intention to speed up its own development for “iDevices” like the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

Of course, as a competitor, it is Skyfire CEO Jeff Glueck’s prerogative to point out that Skyfire supports Flash and plays back video with its mobile proxy browser where Opera Mini for iPhone doesn’t.

We’re always up for a good challenge, and we’d love to compare Safari, Opera Mini, and Skyfire side-by-side. We’re also curious if Skyfire manages to avoid some of Opera Mini’s proxy-related pitfalls, some of which we outline in this First Look video.

Alright, Skyfire, bring it on!

Opera browser gets accepted for Apple iPhone https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/opera-browser-gets-accepted-for-apple-iphone/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/opera-browser-gets-accepted-for-apple-iphone/#comments Tue, 13 Apr 2010 11:38:30 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=706 First rival browser gets access to iPhone

Opera promises faster downloads, less data traffic (Adds background)

HELSINKI, April 13 (Reuters) – Apple Inc (AAPL.O) has accepted distribution of Opera Software’s (OPERA.OL) Internet browser for its iPhone after a long review, opening a new and potentially lucrative market so far closely guarded by Apple.

There are numerous versions of Apple’s own browser on App Store, but Norway-based Opera is the first rival to get access to iPhone.

Opera applied on March 23 for its mobile browser to be distributed on iPhone, and it was available for downloading to consumers early on Tuesday, three weeks later. Usually the review process takes up to one week, developers say.

Analysts have said the decision was difficult for Apple — whose application store is the only way to distribute software for iPhone users — as its Internet browsing function is key behind the success of the iPhone.

Opera’s browser promises up to six times faster download speeds than Apple’s own browser and to cut data traffic by up to 90 percent.

Massive data traffic from iPhone mobile phones has caused problems for many operators’ networks

Opera Mini native version for Windows Mobile 5 and 6 phones https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/opera-mini-native-version-for-windows-mobile-5-and-6-phones/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/opera-mini-native-version-for-windows-mobile-5-and-6-phones/#respond Thu, 04 Mar 2010 10:42:35 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=95 Opera Software today rolled out a native version of Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile 5- and 6-based handsets.

The beta version provides integration of Opera Mini with the Windows Mobile platform. "Opera is able to deliver an optimized version of the popular Opera Mini browser that dramatically improves performance and the overall user experience," a company press release said.

The Opera Mini will work on any Windows Mobile phone, as it does not requires Java.

The Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile includes the same rich feature set as the Java-based version, the company said. Such features as tabbed browsing, password manager, bookmarks and Speed Dial, are built-in.

One of Opera Mini’s claimed benefits is that it compresses data traffic by up to 90 percent, resulting in significantly improved page-loading and speed. "This results in a dramatically reduced data load, which can translate to lower browsing costs when on a pay-per-MB data plan or when on expensive roaming," the company said.

"Windows Mobile deserves a mobile browser that looks better, handles better and delivers better than the default browser," said Dag Olav Norem, Vice President of Products, Opera Software. "Even though Opera has 50 million satisfied Opera Mini users, we always seek ways to improve our browser for each and every mobile phone user out there. Now, we are pleased to offer the world’s most popular mobile Web browser as a native Windows Mobile application."

Windows Mobile 5 and 6 users can download Opera Mini directly to their phone free from http://m.opera.com/next/ or read more at http://www.opera.com/mini/next/.
