How AI is Shaping the Telemedicine Industry https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/how-ai-is-shaping-the-telemedicine-industry/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/how-ai-is-shaping-the-telemedicine-industry/#respond Tue, 13 Apr 2021 07:03:23 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=7198 How AI is Shaping the Telemedicine Industry

Do you know ‘Coronavirus’ topped the list of Google Searches, 2020? Yes, Google processes billions of searches every day, and not surprisingly, ‘Coronavirus’ turned out to be the most searched term on Google in the erstwhile 2020. Why? Because people cared for their life. When life becomes uncertain, people seek answers. This phase in humanity brings about a transition in the world of digital healthcare where telemedicine comes out to be a unanimous choice! Advancements in AI as a cutting edge technology, its applications in telemedicine happened years ago. However, with the onset of COVID-19, telemedicine is back in full swing. In layman’s language, it is a digital application that allows doctors to prescribe medications, treat patients through their screens.

Let’s see how AI transformative capabilities are helping the telemedicine industry the world over.

1. Digitization of Patient-Doctor Relationship

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in collaboration with Edge technology, has empowered the telemedicine industry to a greater level. With the help of AI, telemedicine is evolving patient care and healthcare experience through smooth accessibility. It helps in remote patient monitoring(RPM) or telemonitoring that gathers patients’ data from medical centers, hospitals, to keep a tab on their health conditions. Telemedicine has been a major factor in treating COVID-19 while curbing its speed at the same time. For instance, AI technology helping telemedicine for remote-patient monitoring, where doctors could track the current health status of high-risk patients, by using internet-connected at-home devices and mobile applications where two-way communication becomes feasible. This process minimizes the health risks for elderly patients or post-op patients or those suffering from chronic illness.AI enabled Telemedicine facilitates collecting data from varied connected devices and gives insights to doctors who then do adjustments in care and monitoring of compliances for severe patients like coronary patients. The latter need to maintain specific medication and lifestyle changes to make progress in their health respectively.

2. Enabling Doctors’ Collaboration

AI feeds on data and new AI applications come to the fore when more data pools come out of the telemedicine processes like remote-care, and so on. Moreover, AI-based telemedicine facilitates hospitals, healthcare institutions, and clinics, doctors to mutually collaborate in novel ways. This way, they manage to pool resources from each other at critical times. For example, Banner Health, one of the largest non-profit systems existing in the US, during the surge of COVID-19 patients, collaborated with Intel, as well as VeeMEd, a telehealth platform, and brought AI-powered telemedicine software solutions to more than one thousand in-room televisions throughout  Banner-Health’s twenty-eight facilities in the country. This collaboration helped specialists (from pulmonology, infectious diseases, cardiology, critical care, nephrology) in the facilities to attend to more patients without risking COVID transmission. Another big help had been that these specialists did not need to spend on expensive personal protective equipment like masks, gloves, and face shields and could preserve them for emergency needs. All thanks to AI-powered telemedicine that allowed(and allowing) consulting with patients on a remote basis.

3. HIT or the Health Information Technology

AI-powered telemedicine facilitates the collecting, storing, and managing of massive electronic data in varied healthcare systems. This AI capability is called Health Information Technology(HIT) in telemedicine terminology. For instance, several electronic health records, e-prescriptions, etc. help patients and doctors to meet their mutual goals towards coping with diseases like diabetes, flu, viral diseases, etc. All these data are processed using HIT. How does it work? AI algorithms in HIT facilitate retrieving, systemizing medical data in various healthcare institutions, hospitals. Artificial Intelligence(AI) is helping in the segment of health information system in the following two ways-

  • NLP helps physicians, doctors, to categorize records of patients, varied healthcare policies systematically.
  • AI-based Neural Networks, are hugely applied for storing a wide scale of medical data. Also, it protects these data from fraudulence and unethical activities.

4. Tele Diagnosing of Patients

AI-powered tele-diagnosis of patients is a clinical method that incorporates a remote-based diagnosing of patients located across geographical boundaries. The telemedicine approach of this kind proves to be very effective in the early diagnosis of deadly diseases like cancer. Here, AI helps patients in early diagnosis of cancer, at its nascent stage itself when it is curable. Another area in telemedicine where AI is helping a lot is that of Tele-Dermatology. Like, detecting Melanoma, a severe type of skin cancer, is possible by AI-based Convolutional Neural Networks.

AI Lets Genie Out of the Bottle

AI technology is helping the telemedicine industry in varied ways, in varied virtual forms. Virtual Online Assistants, Natural Language Processing, and many more forms of AI are increasingly progressing in the market, bringing several novel ways of treating patients on a remote basis. There already exist some popular virtual online assistants, or the Chatbots like Babylon Health, OneRemission, Florence, and so on. As Steve Allen, the director of health solutions, Intel’s Health and Life Sciences group, says, “I think it’s fair to say that telemedicine helped stop the collapse of the health system here in the U.S. Now, it’s becoming recognized as valuable technology with real benefits to all parties.”

He continues, “the genie is out of the bottle.”

How Technology Can Revive Travel and Tourism Industry https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/how-technology-can-revive-travel-and-tourism-industry/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/how-technology-can-revive-travel-and-tourism-industry/#respond Tue, 06 Oct 2020 14:10:45 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=6861

Are you a travel lover? A travel vlogger? A globetrotter? Or, just a simple person who loves vacationing with family or friends, to take a break from routine life? What’s so common with you all? Well, a chorus could be – “How to beat the pandemic blues!” The very chorus that resonates the whole world today. Not even the President of United States is immune to this devil virus, CORONA virus. No doubt, everyone is wishing him a sooner recovery but how to recover from the massive losses incurred so far globally, in terms of life and property!?  Fingers crossed!

The pandemic due to COVID-19 has caused major disruptions in the global economy. Another recession, economy slowdown, rapid rise in unemployment, and what not! There’s been an abrupt halt in international travel, severely impacting the tourism industry. Greater chunks of government revenue, foreign exchange earnings, employment source, depend on tourism sector. Travel & tourism, being a vital lifeline for revenues worldwide, ironically, battling for survival! The industry is struggling to cope up the repercussions but as you all know, there is a silver lining to every dark cloud in the sky. The significant catch is the change in customer behavior that amounts to the overall revamping process of industry. Technology plays a pivotal role here, again.

Robotics Technology

Social distancing has become a new normal today and people are religiously following the DOs and DONTs under the Corona advisory. People are reluctant to travel and their perception of holidaying and recreation has totally upended, a complete halt. When humans fall, machines arise. The Travel & Tourism industry is shifting focus to recovery and deploying robots everywhere – airport, hotel, restaurants, tourist places, etc. The motto is   minimizing human-to-human contact and bolstering people’s confidence. But how?

The Robotics technology is propelling self-service methods, travel-agents use them for pre-screening process, text-based chatbots & robotic assistants in front desk are serving the needs of travelers thus reducing queue sizes. Right from acting as a concierge, to greeting guests and providing information from time to time, robots are seen all around in hotels, restaurants, airports.

For instance, if you happen to visit New Sheraton, Los Angeles, robots will enthrall you with their unique service. Wayfinder, the friendly robot will guide you to find out direction, say, steakhouse, swimming pool, room, wherever you want to go. The Luggage robot/Tug robot will carry your luggage duly locked for security reason, you just have to use a 4-digit code to unlock and get it to your room! Rom Service robot will bring food to your room, a genuine room service, and you can even give tips to them!

So, where did you get chance to break the protocol of social distancing? Robotics technology is all set to revive tourism the world over.

Virtual Reality

Have you planned your next trip? Because now you can experience locations on your itinerary right from your home using Virtual Reality tools. You can have an immersive experience by virtually travelling your hotels, restaurants, landmarks, and even the sightseeing activities! These 360 tours or VR tours you can experience via your smartphones or web browsers using In-Consumer gears. This way, you can plan your vacation, trips using technology without any human intervention. You are indeed using virtual tools to experience the real world!

Virtual & Contactless Payments

In the wake of pandemic, you’d definitely vouch for the contactless payment where you don’t need to carry cash, debit card or a credit card, rather your smart mobile phone is smart enough to do the payments for your travel. Yes, you are carrying a Mobile wallet with you. MPOS, P2P are a few digital payment modes that give you an entire seamless experience. No more frets!

Internet- of- Things (IoT)

The unprecedented constraints on aviation due to pandemic has led to a complete chaos in the travel & tourism sector. However, airlines are resuming operations while keeping safety measures intact. The Internet-of-Things technology has emerged as an exciting savior which calls for interconnecting daily devices via internet. IOT based HVAC systems combat airborne transmission of viruses in the airport thus protecting you from any probable infection.

Do you know how Abu-Dhabi International Airport is using motion based elevators where you can just wave your hand to point your destination floor? That makes you pretty safe because distance between you and your fellow passenger is being maintained.

Way-finding apps such as WISEFLY will alert you if you come close to any other person nearby, thus, helping you maintain social distance.

The robot Wayfinder that served you a while ago in New Sheraton, Los Angeles (courtesy the Robotics Technology paragraph above), did follow an IoT technology sensor based doors to lead you to your room.

Biometric-Recognition Technology

Again, in Dubai International Airport, ‘Smart Tunnel’ uses facial recognition as an identification tool. You get a single digital ID which can determine your unique identity, travel – detail & biometrics. Thus, you don’t have to carry physical documents, only one biometric travel token through all touch-points is what you require! Touchless technology is here to stay!

AI & Big Data

Connie is the AI-powered robot deployed by Hilton hotels. It uses Artificial Intelligence & Speech Recognition to speak to tourists seeking information. Then you have SAM, your intelligent travel – chatbot, guiding you every minute predicting weather or traffics or any sightseeing opportunities you should not miss! Thus, no need of a tourist guide.

Big Data & Predictive Analysis technology is helping the industry analyzing current business performance, viz. hotel business using Big Data for revenue management purpose to anticipate future demand levels.

According to a recent BCG- Consumer Sentiment Survey report (respondents from USA, Canada, France, Germany, UK, Italy, China) 54 per cent said they would prioritize social distancing as a major precaution while going on trips. Even United Nations’ World Tourism Organization has recently released a set of global guidelines to resume tourism and emphasized the role of technology as a major transforming tool for the industry. Thus, prioritizing people’s sentiments, the industry has to adopt technology as a major reviving weapon to resurrect itself, as well as restore tourists’ confidence to restart their journey to destinations that they had once dreamt of, before the global crisis started.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/natural-language-processing-nlp/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/natural-language-processing-nlp/#respond Thu, 16 Aug 2018 07:20:02 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=3981

By “natural language” we refer to a language used for daily communication by human beings; languages like English, Hindi or Portuguese. Natural Language contrasts to artificial languages such as programming languages and mathematical notations and it has evolved from generation to generation. It is not an easy task to pin down with explicit rules. The way we, humans, communicate with each other is Natural Language. Think about how much text you see each day: Signs, Menus, Email, SMS, Web Pages and the list is endless. Automated manipulation of natural language, like speech and text, by software is Natural Language Processing, or NLP. It helps machines learn to communicate with each other and with humans in a meaningful way. Several decades of research resulted in development of NLP, however, the current word2vec technology has brought in pathbreaking results. In medicine, SNOMED-CT aids the development of NLP by use of indices and their relationships. For example, with the term “hepatomegaly” in input data, machine can still recognize even if user inputs as “liver enlargement”. Classification of digital documents in a uniform fashion is made easy and possible by this method.

NLP – Advantages

Natural Language Processing or NLP as simple as counting word occurrences to compare different writing styles. NLP can also be as complex as “understanding” of complete human utterances to give useful responses to them. The precise requirements as well as the highly unambiguous structured voice commands make it tough to develop NLP applications.

Even though the development stage is little complex, using NLP in the applications has lots of advantages:

  • Automatic summarization: It produces a readable summary of a part of the text.
  • Co reference resolution: It determines which words refer to the same objects, out of the given sentence or larger portion of text.
  • Discourse analysis: This includes several related tasks such as identifying the discourse structure of connected text.
  • Better results all the way around: It is beyond keyword matching or text-oriented search; meaning-to-meaning search provides results that are correct according to the form of the input text, whereas NLP delivers applicable results as soon as your customer hits “search.” Understanding the intension of the customer.
  • Search processing translates the intention of your customer: Your customers are human beings, which means they’re not 100 percent accurate in communication. They make spell errors; they may confuse brands with products and forget product or service details — It depends on how robust your on-site search is to fill the gap when these errors happen. NLP connects the dots to keep search unified, even in the scenarios like typos or abrupt information.
  • More data extracted means more data for growth: Measuring what your customers intend to search is key in improving your business. Through NLP, you can learn about customer habits, preferences, and tendencies across your entire consumer base. This data can be re-applied across several phases of your business, from marketing to SEO, doing campaigns to sales and promotions and a lot more.
  • Complex search options affects results: The ability to handle numerous variables in a single search means providing a collective result that’s suggestive of your customer’s end needs. Natural language processing looks at a broader picture, not just the user input keywords in a search, providing results that are the summation of their parts. Results that might be wrongly recognized by text-based searches or accidentally misplaced or missed out from keyword queries.
  • Contextual understanding delivers answers: Today’s search engines are confining to Q&A boxes — customers ask questions and expect answers. In addition to the complicated search options afforded by NLP, your customers can raise questions freely and get to products they’re looking for. Question based searches calls out a huge challenge in your skill-set to serve customers who might not be using the technical keywords or main phrases in their search for a specific product.
The above variables embedded in your search website contribute to fast hit of your e-commerce websites looking for to better serve their customers — and they can all be credited to natural language processing, which is as simple as human language!

Technologies Based On NLP

Technologies constructed on NLP are becoming increasingly widespread. For example, our phones that has the feature of predictive text and handwriting recognition; web search engines retrieves information locked up in unstructured text; machine translation reads and understands texts written in Chinese and re-read them in Spanish; text analysis assists us to detect sentiment in tweets and blogs.

By promising a bridge between human and machine, accessing stored information, natural language processing plays a vital role in the multilingual society.

Importance and Impacts of NLP in Our Life

Natural language processing has many central implications on the ways that computers and humans network on our daily life: To name few, here are the few fields that we come across daily.

1- Mental Illness Analysis — Measure how countless linguistic features of conversations are connected with conversation outcomes. By applying models that are associated with better conversation outcomes as sequence-based conversation models, language model comparisons, message clustering, and psycholinguistics-inspired word frequency analyses, to discover actionable conversation strategies.

2- Mining electronic health records for mammography research — associating mammographic and pathologic results in clinical decision support using natural language processing and data mining methods.

3- NLP Algorithm and Asthma Ascertainment — Application of a Natural Language Processing Algorithm to Asthma Ascertainment through an Automated Chart Review

4 – Natural Language Processing for On-Site Search: If you have or use an e-commerce site, you must be very familiar with natural language processing (NLP) being used in Site Search. More than just another path, NLP has been identified as a powerhouse in the realm of on-site search and has brought in vast number of advantages packaged up only for those who focus on improving their business by improvising their site search capabilities.

The World Changing On Two Letter Acronyms – AI/VR/AR/ML https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/the-world-changing-on-two-letter-acronyms-ai-vr-ar-ml/ https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/the-world-changing-on-two-letter-acronyms-ai-vr-ar-ml/#respond Mon, 16 Jul 2018 10:48:19 +0000 https://www.fusioninformatics.com/blog/?p=3872 AI-VR-AR-ML

In this digital era, the terms like Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning are thrown in more often. These four two letter acronyms are the futuristic technologies that are being used in the development of lots of tech products. Most of us don’t know the real meaning of these terms. Though, all four have brought some huge changes in the world of technology, the question “Which Technology can pave the way for the future” has been nagging our minds for a long time. Hope this article gives you a clear idea of how these technologies work and aid you understand their contribution to various fields.

The ‘big four’ are:

  • AI – Artificial Intelligence
  • ML – Machine Learning
  • AR – Augmented Reality
  • VR – Virtual Reality

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Let us discuss about one of the revolutionary world changing term Artificial Intelligence. The term coined by John McCarthy is considered the father of AI  in 1955. In fact, AI is the big umbrella under which machine learning and deep learning which are being used for various applications in the market. Deep learning is the latest innovation in AI. AI has a gigantic effect on your life, whether you’re aware of it or not, and its influence is likely to grow in the coming years.

What Are The Uses of AI?

Today AI is ubiquitous, used to recommend what you should buy next online, to recognize your voice and understand what you say to virtual assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri, to recognise who and what is in a photo, to spot spam, or detect credit card fraud etc.

A website like Amazon.com uses AI to suggest products that you could like. Facebook tells you whom you could know and want to be friends with. iOS’s Siri, and Windows Mobiles’ Cortana are all intelligent digital personal assistants which help us to find handy information when you ask for it using your voice; you can say “Where’s the nearest Coffee shop?”, “What’s on my schedule today?”, “Remind me to call John at seven o’clock,” and the assistant will respond by getting information, communicating information from your phone, or sending commands to other apps. Siri completes your tasks. Google lists search results based on your location. At the start of this year, the Washington Post reported  an algorithm that was developed by Google to potentially let self-driving cars learn to drive in the same way that humans do, through experience. These programs are all active applications of AI.

Microsoft says that Cortana “continually learns about its user” and that it will ultimately develop the skill to anticipate users’ needs. Virtual personal assistants process an enormous amount of data from a variety of sources to learn about users and be more active in helping them consolidate and track their information.

Many smart home devices now include the ability to learn your behaviour patterns and help you save money by adjusting the settings on your thermostat or other appliances in an effort to increase convenience and save energy. AI is everywhere, and it’s making a huge difference in our lives every day.

Machine Learning (ML)

Now let’s see “what is Machine Learning?”, “The use of Machine leaning” and “how does it work in our day today life?”.

Machine learning is a similar concept of AI. The term machine learning was coined by Arthur Samuel in 1959. Machine Learning is a division of artificial intelligence based on the idea that systems can learn from data, identify patterns and make decisions with minimal human intervention. Machine learning makes use of algorithms to build analytical models, assisting computers “learn” from data.

Detection of network intruders working towards a data breach, email filtering, optical character recognition,  and computer vision are all ML applications.  Machine learning is so ubiquitous today. Many researchers also think that it is the best way to make progress towards human-level AI.

AI, as the idea that machines can act intelligently, is an extensive concept. Machine learning is an idea that machines should be able to learn themselves to get access to enough data. This might sound like the territory of geeks, but it could also be a way to deliver personalised recommendations and solutions in the future.

Augmented Reality (AR) & Virtual Reality

Tim Cook, CEO, Apple said “I’m excited about Augmented Reality because unlike Virtual Reality which closes the world out, AR allows individuals to be present in the world but hopefully allows an improvement on what’s happening presently… That has resonance.”

AR and VR are very popular in these centuries. Bu the terms can be confusing. Sometimes few think AR and VR are but same.

Let us discuss about importance of AR and VR as well as how does they influenced our day to day life? Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that widens our physical world, merging layers of digital information with the user’s experience in real time. It is Boeing researcher Thomas Caudell who first coined the term Augmented Reality in 1990.

Virtual Reality (VR), by use of computer modelling and simulation, connects the user with an artificial three-dimensional (3-D) visual. In 1987, Jaron Lanier used the term ‘Virtual reality’ for the first time.

How do Augmented and Virtual Realities Differ? Virtual reality provides a digital rebirth of a real-life pulses, while augmented reality delivers virtual elements as a connect to the real world. Augmented reality is being used more and more in mobile devices such as laptops, smart phones, and tablets to change how the real world and digital images, graphics intersect and interact. Whereas in Virtual Reality is usually brought to the user through a head-mounted, or hand-held controller. This equipment establishes a connect between people and virtual reality, allows both to control and navigate their actions in an environment meant to simulate the real-time world.

Let us see, what are the main similarities between AR and VR? In terms of technology, they each exist to serve the user with an enhanced or enriched experience.

With virtual reality, you can swim with sharks. And with augmented reality, you feel a shark coming out of your screen.

When more freedom and promises are made possible for marketers because it does not need to be a head-mounted display.

Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are the key examples of experiences and interactions enabled by a deep immersion into a simulated land for entertainment and play, or to add a new approach of interaction between digital devices and the real world.
